ABSTRACT

Embouchure problems in brass players are relatively common. A new technique (embouchure video-stroboscopy) used to observe lip vibration inside a mouthpiece in order to examine what happens when failure of note production occurs is described. 20 brass players with playing problems (11 trumpeters, 7 trombone players and 2 French horn players) were examined using this technique. In 17 players the reason for loss of lip vibration and reason for note failure could be seen and data is presented offering explanations. It is suggested that caution be exercised when offering psychological causes for playing difficulties.
