ABSTRACT

Totem poles are the most visible of Northwest Coast art forms. You still find them in British Columbia and Southeast Alaska: - rarely

in their 'original' settings in Native villages but quite commonly as articulators of the street-scapes of Northwest Coast towns. The multiple meanings of totem poles in Northwest Coast settings are made evident by their multiple settings, and the ways in which they articulate and punctuate the village or urban landscapes in unexpected ways.
