ABSTRACT

This chapter attempts to answer the questions: What kinds of applicants with what types of symptoms are accepted by these agencies? What is the disposition of all cases coming to these clinics? What happens to children who show signs of delinquency or near-delinquency? It focuses on the correlates of acceptance of applicants for services, as revealed by the records of contact with all persons applying to certain clinics. The child-guidance clinic appears as a symbol of help to many troubled parents whose children are "emotionally disturbed," including those who show signs of being or of becoming delinquent. The child-guidance clinic is one of the community's major psychiatric resources for children in cities across the United States. The basic frequency distributions in each of the three child-guidance clinics and the two court clinics indicate the composition of the population which comes to or is sent to each clinic in the course of the year.
