ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the results of a detailed study of a group of delinquents at the outset of their institution experience—just after admission to a reception center. It is a part of a more comprehensive investigation that will take repeated measurements during the period of the delinquent's institutionalization. The chapter provides information regarding the manner in which the newly institutionalized delinquent conceives of himself and the social environment in which he lives. It presents his expectations about the future in general terms and with reference to future employment, probation, and interaction with the agencies of the law. The role of probation and employment in the post-release period is perceived by the delinquent in a generally unfavorable light. The wider use of clinic resources before any court appearance may serve to check the delinquent's course toward a philosophy of antagonism to the law.
