ABSTRACT

A perusal of the works in black electoral politics will reveal that there are four basic subsections. The black political leadership studies tended to concentrate on a single individual, a collection of individuals, or black politicos. Many of the works dealing with political realignment have basically overlooked this pioneering work. One way to empirically address this question is to look at the book reviews of these works in the major political science journals. Reflecting back, on the pioneering works in black politics in the formative years, 1903-1965, a small beginning was made, but the work was basically ignored by the academic community. Observers of the black political scene paid close attention to this fact, as well as to the demand from black pressure politics for the right to vote and basic civil and political rights. Black congressmen and black presidential politics, with some five and three books, respectively, garnered nearly the same attention.
