ABSTRACT

Reprint of the book Conservatism Revisited; it appeared in 1949, not without controversy, as the first book of "the new conservatism" in postwar America. In the retrospect of 1962 here are its two most dreadful defects. First Defect: the book's deliberate focus on Prince Metternich was much too narrow a base for any well-rounded discussion of conservatism, especially in America. Metternich was chosen, among several other reasons of historical scholarship, in order to emphasize the point that international conservatism and international liberalism should have joined hands against Realpolitik nationalism instead of fighting each other. Second defect: While in no way endorsing the smug reactionary misuse of conservatism and indeed warning in advance against it at the end of the 1949 Foreword, the book failed nonetheless to foresee the appalling extent to which this misuse would triumph.
