ABSTRACT

The independence of the factor analytic concepts of personality structure from earlier, pre-metric theories starts from the very beginning— namely, in the choice of behavior to be observed. The main difference between the clinical inheritance of theory and that growing from multivariate experiment is seen obviously at first in the introduction of precise measurement and complex calculation into the latter. The multivariate experimental method is one that proceeds as in clinical method but with greater precision of measurement and analysis. It has a major and indispensable role to play, compared with the bivariate method, in most phases of personality research. Few psychologists outside two or three laboratories are yet acquainted with the immense variety of behavioral tests on which T-data personality structure is based. By dynamic traits people mean those connected with interest and motivation, the measures of which have the quality of changing most in response to changes in situational incentives.
