ABSTRACT

With the defeat of Iraq and the disposal of Saddam Hussein in April 2003, America appeared poised on the verge of another historic quest for the creation of a New World Order. The United States must lead the even greater war and summon its moral resources and reaffirm its unique place in history with appeals which are derived from the very foundations of the original revolution: liberty and justice for all. September 11, 2001 reversed that strategic somnambulism abruptly. Serious wars require domestic intelligence and serious internal security measures. The surge in American patriotism since the terrorist attacks has been real and widespread but its depth has yet to be tested. After a long period of languishing in the shadow of Vietnam, the qualities reflective of a patriotic spirit began a revival toward the end of the century. Ironically, much of this came from sources not generally associated with traditional areas of a patriotic nature.
