ABSTRACT

A primary function of human behavior theory is to offer explanations of how people make transitions across the life course by carrying out their roles in various social systems. This chapter discusses how to recognize behaviors that constitute competent social functioning in family systems and in the workplace. The purpose of general systems theory is "to assist social workers in maintaining a focus on the dynamic interplay of the many biological and social systems that affect client behavior". During the 1960s and early 1970s, a renewed focus on the environmental factors that influence personality prompted social workers' interest in role theory. Role theory was originated by social scientists who wanted to explain the relationship between a social structure and the way individuals enact their socially designated or normative behaviors. Because individuals perform many roles in a given day, role theory is particularly helpful during assessment.
