ABSTRACT

The research reported in this book was supported by a federal grant, which is typically administered by an institution of higher education. For this study, sponsorship was undertaken by a large private university which was responsible not only for the research aspects of the project, but also for the creation and management of the community lodge itself. The assumption of these responsibilities led to a series of agreements and relations between the university, the research staff, the hospital from which lodge members came, and several community groups. This chapter will describe the relation of the university to these institutions and groups. It will illustrate the kind of administrative commitments necessary for such experiments in social innovation and it will describe the social relations which developed in carrying out these commitments.
