ABSTRACT

In this chapter we shall examine certain of the images in the minds of Americans about the internal Communist threat. Here our concern will be primarily with a qualitative description of the contents of beliefs. A study of the important matter of how perception of the internal Communist threat relates to tolerance of nonconformists is reserved mainly for the next chapter.
