ABSTRACT

The social system depends on the extent to which it can keep the equilibrium of the personality systems of its members from varying beyond certain limits. Personal charisma, as in the power of the hero, the gnomic wisdom of the prophet, the inspiration of the genius, the intuitive understanding of the mother, the elegance of the woman of fashion, are also powerful social mysteries. The priestly stress upon sacred mysteries, which attains its most powerful expression in visions of a celestial hierarchy, is secularized and specialized in many roles. Dramatic progression, the style of action, becomes a form of grace in religion as well as in social and art expression. Social progression involves steps or stages as well as fixed levels. Every social transcendence involves choice, and once choice is made, uneven distribution of social power is inevitable.
