ABSTRACT

The aesthetic attitude adds distinction to utility, and "poetry to action". Genuine aesthetic effect is produced in the movies only when "the pleasure in that which is seen serves to bring out the values of the life that one lives". But community life must be so organized that those who can import such aesthetic experience into activity can help other members of the community to attain the same kind of experience. True, one cannot say that aesthetic delight has been normal in community life, and it may be that vast changes in society must occur before aesthetic delight is shared by many. George Herbert Mead makes the aesthetic moment necessary to experience by making it a part of what he calls "the philosophy of the act". Thus, for Mead, imagery of the future determines the act because it organizes action in the present.
