ABSTRACT
T R A D I T I O N A L L Y , "epistemology" means the theory of knowledge —the study of the nature of knowing-and the branch of philosophy which has grown up around the word is intertwined w i t h ontology, the study of the nature of being. Indeed, Descartes' famous "cogito ergo sum"—"I think, therefore I am"— defines a meeting point of these two types of philosophical in - quiry.
