ABSTRACT

Conflict should lead to the violence which in turn should lead to more violence and conflict. It might also be expected that the high incidence of both would lead to disruption and instability in the community. The murder rate per 100,000 over this period depends on what one takes as the average population figure. The extremely numerous, relatively minor conflicts so overtly contested among the women of the village were connected with only occasional and very minor violence and almost never reached the level of weapon use. Intoxication is mentioned in the court records in 8 of 32 killings. It is also mentioned in 17 cases of violence, and though less explicit, it seems highly probable in 35 of the others, either from the location in bars or from the behavior described. There is a very high co-incidence between the lists of the violent and the lists of alcoholics and heavy drinkers.
