ABSTRACT

The nonviolent alternative to collective violence as a factor in the process of social change has developed in depth and in scope over the past two years. With the radical critique of research still in full swing, it may be best to start by describing people's research strategy with regard to the people people study, the ways in which they "use" them, and the purpose for which their research findings will be used. The personality test has been given to over 700 persons representing samples of college students, persons attending summer music festivals, and participants in workshops for trainers in nonviolent direct action. On April 15, 1970, members of the research team were on hand at the internal revenue headquarters in Philadelphia to observe a demonstration conducted by the Philadelphia War Tax Resisters group. Agents are cautioned to avoid picayune arrests because an arrest can be seen by the demonstrators as the successful climax of a demonstration.
