ABSTRACT
Grand mal epilepsy, manifested by convulsions and loss of consciousness, is a serious neurological illness. Although Hippocrates (b. 460 B. C.) attributed the disease to natural causes, for millennia people preferred to believe that seizures were caused by deities or demons and regarded the disease as either sacred or accursed.
