ABSTRACT

Freud's (1926) own opinion on this issue is well-known to you. His gloomy view thirty or more years ago of the "future of analysis if it does not succeed in creating an abode for itself outside of medicine," (letter to Ferenczi, May 13, 1928: Jones, 1957, p. 319-320), a view reiterated again only a year before his death (letter to Schnier, July 5, 1938: Jones, 1957, p. 323) has at least in part been prophetically correct.
