ABSTRACT

This chapter presents in some detail some different case histories illustrating the influences and processes, which were operative within the group as a whole. These particular cases were selected because these respondents were very 'open' and provides relatively speaking, with a more detailed picture of their feelings and reactions. In certain ways, they bear a strong resemblance to the other set of dissatisfied clients, those who sought help in dealing with someone else. The cases subsequently presented are intended to bring out processes that were more characteristic, in the main, of clients seeking material help, specifically dissatisfied ones. Clients seeking interpersonal help, it will be recalled, were puzzled by the worker's lack of active participation, his focusing on them instead of the 'responsible' party, and his probing into the past. Figuratively speaking, worker and client were engaged in a continuous tug of war, with each trying to bring the conversation back to 'essentials'.
