ABSTRACT

At the end of the twentieth century, the role of corporations in society became a hot topic amid a budding era of globalization. The origins and development of the concept of corporate social responsibility match this trend. The value that corporations place on social responsibility did not happen spontaneously; it evolved over long history of give and take between corporations and nonprofit organizations, such as various environmental and charitable organizations. Corporate social responsibility is becoming an international trend. With economic globalization, relationship between corporations and society has been redefined. Corporate participation in charity creates a win-win situation for society and corporations. Corporations are motivated by altruism and the prospect of increased sales, lower tax levels, improved social image, and increased organizational cohesion, ultimately helping them realize their profit goals. In China, corporations still often demonstrate an unwillingness to engage in philanthropy or to donate. In a mature market economy, corporate philanthropy is mutually beneficial for corporations and charitable foundations.
