ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses regional and global integration between Taiwan and China in relation to their interdependence with the global economy. With regard to Taiwan's global reach, it gives more concrete examples of its pursuit of international status through its affiliation with international organizations. The chapter examines the special security and economic relations between Taiwan and the United States. It analyzes the subtle economic and political relations between Taiwan and mainland China. For an understanding of regional international relations, the chapter extrapolates foreign policy implications from the perspective of quadrangular relations, specifically in light of issues such as the effects of being a World Trade Organization (WTO) member and the aftermath of Hong Kong's changeover in 1997. It assesses the implications of China's joining the WTO, and concludes by discussing the recent problems and challenges of the regional development in East Asian region.
