ABSTRACT

An individual's understanding of himself must begin with an understanding of his origin. Thus, the concern of modern man to understand his behavior has led to an investigation of the forces that influence human development. Life consists of biological processes of change. Even within a single cell - the smallest structural unit of a living thing - continuing change takes place. The whole organism is in a process of continuing change; but the process of the whole is infinitely more complex than the process within a cell. The relationship of behavior to genetic bases is being increasingly unraveled with advancements in the science of genetics. It is not always possible to make a distinction between inherited and environmental influences. Although life begins simply with the fertilized egg, ensuing development is complex and far from understood. It is now recognized that the environment is important, since from the very beginning the fertilized cell is dependent on certain environmental conditions.
