Ethnic Groups and Regions of the City

ByAndrew M. Greeley

Men and women often marry beyond the boundaries of their ethnic origins so that many have some difficulty in determining what their ethnic background is. It is very difficult to estimate cultural differences among Ethnic Groups and neighborhood communities within the Archdiocese. Even with more than 500 respondents, there are enough diverse ethnic groups that case bases quickly disappear. The Irish are, by history and personality, masters of the political game. They have governed both the city and the Church for a century though they do not dominate the city, much less the Church by their numbers. There are many theories about why Chicago Catholics tend to divide themselves along the lines of political theology through some astral magic, managed to win the World Series in four games. One might even suggest that there be parades through the Catholic rainforest of symbols that appeal to all the ethnic groups by celebrating the unity and diversity that the rainforest revels.
