ABSTRACT

I n the autumn of 1968, after the preceding reviewing and critiquing, we em­ barked upon a feasibility study exploring the potentialities for large-scale collaborative work. As indicated in Chapter 1, we approached this task by visiting a variety of centers of research and clinical activity and interviewing key individuals. I n each instance we sent in advance a copy of our review paper, our grant application and the following questions as stimuli for dis­ cussion:

1. Consider what we call the "standard scientific question": "What specific therapeutic interventions produce specific changes in specific patients under specific conditions?" What kinds of studies do you consider most promising in working toward the objective of different methods for dif­ ferent problems? What priorities would you assign? What kinds of stud­ ies are likely to result in the greatest "payoff"?
