ABSTRACT

The resettlement effort was saved by an accident, coupled with a positive action by the administrators. If either had been missing, there would probably be little more than bush in this part of Nigeria today. The positive action was flexibility on the part of the innovators. After they learned of the objections, they decided to let the local people alter the houses to a limited extent. Primarily because communication was well-established, and because of the flexibility of the innovators, the interest of the recipients was kindled for the first time. Several years ago the Administration conceived the idea of establishing a model village in this area. The local Chiefs were persuaded by the District Officer to make available an area of flat unoccupied land by the side of the motor road three miles away. The principal objection to the model house design was of excess ventilation.
