ABSTRACT

There is little doubt that the most difficult area of behavior to change is that in which the advantages of new practices are most difficult to demonstrate. Furthermore, there is little doubt that among the ideas being carried from the Western world, those concerning health are the most difficult to demonstrate. The difficulties of transmitting new health practices are not caused by a lack of interest in health; to the contrary, peasant people everywhere are quite concerned about their physical well-being. Some recommendations of what might have been done do suggest themselves. Above all else, more efficient communication in the form of health education was required. Almost every visitor to the district commented on the absence of the usual crowds of children in every village and the infrequency with which a woman with a baby on her back was seen.
