ABSTRACT

Manuel Benitez' seniors, contemporaries, and betters—like Ordonez, Ostos, Camino, Leal, and Diego Puerta, to name but a few—are upholding the true art of toreo, disgusted though they may be with the phenomenon of a Benitez in their midst, a school of dolphins intruded upon by a blowfish. Colour, movement, and sounds are the basic stimuli in the art of toreo. oreo natural is that style in which the matador does not force the animal to change its line of charge materially, but in which he accompanies the animal, accommodating himself to it. Toreo cambiado is that style in which the animal is taken out of the line of charge by the position of the matador's approach and by his use of the lure. From the south came reports of novilleros who gave themselves idiotic sobriquets and who were doing things to their animals in apparent seriousness that formerly had been done only in charlotadas, or comic toreo.
