ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the objectives of the Arabs in the Israel conflict. The objective in the conflict is the central axis of the attitude of the party in question and endows it with significance. Conflict between states as a political phenomenon percolates to the level of the masses and is reflected in attitudes and hostilities, while, on the other hand, popular attitudes and hostilities are liable to influence the political course of the conflict. The Arabs denote their objective using large number of alternative expressions that are classified in two main groups: express, explicit and undisguised statements calling upon the Arabs to liquidate Israel; ambiguous, oblique expressions, which may be understood in different ways and do not expressly refer to liquidation, but nevertheless imply it. Non-belligerent Arab statements do not necessarily signify acquiescence in Israel's existence; sometimes they indicate the quest for a different road to the liquidation of Israel— by peaceful means.
