DETERMINING a community's rule or rules of residence in marriage has long been established as a basic requirement for any satisfactory descriptive account of its social system. That residence practices are important determinants of the various forms of family and kinship organization has long been postulated by ethnologists and recently been given impressive statistical documentation by Murdock.
