ABSTRACT

The presence of animals in society and the criminal justice system is complex. Some relationships between humans and animals are traditional or well-established under the law. Certain interactions far exceed traditional relationships and venture into extremes. Relentless infractions have resulted in at least one dog park in the United States opting to utilize cutting-edge technology to avoid any temptation to recklessly litter. Some people have concocted far-fetched schemes in order to blame animals for crimes. Food is frequently linked with a variety of crimes. Extreme situations involving animals affect the criminal justice system. Extreme, advanced, and shocking possibilities will continue to filter into the justice system. Some of these extremes will help law enforcement and the justice system to better respond to infractions and crimes. However, some extremes will continue to shock public conscience or challenge common understandings of human-animal relationships.
