ABSTRACT

Beginning at the time when she was teaching in a girls’ school, in California, two years before her marriage, Ruth Benedict kept a journal in which she wrote only intermittently, but over a long period of years. The “Journal: 1912-1916” was kept in a black bound notebook. The entries, written in ink, have been much corrected. Three passages, written on odd sheets of paper and dated November and December, 1915, have been interpolated.
