ABSTRACT

Traditional Chinese medicine has a unique theoretical and practical approach to the treatment of disease, which has developed over thousands of years. American medical missionaries began to establish modern clinics and hospitals and opened medical schools, laying the foundations of modern medicine in China. American missionary doctors played a significant role in introducing modern medicine into Canton, which thereafter initiated a transformation of medicine in China. This chapter discusses some key concepts in this book. The book discusses the development from medical assistantship to medical schools at the Canton Hospital, as well as the development of the modern medical education in Canton, and examines the impact of Canton's modern medical education on China. It studies how American women medical missionaries Dr. Mary Niles and Dr. Mary Fulton established China's first medical college for women and the impact of the Hackett Medical College for Women on China.
