ABSTRACT
Hitler was notoriously cold, with an attenuated relation to other human beings. He gave evidence of no sense that the others could have feelings independently of him. His own were a solipsistic orbit around himself when not simply hateful toward designated enemies. He could kill millions without hesitation, because of the statesmanship of his situation and the taste required. All the women in Hitler's life suffered. The young Hitler easily separated from his widowed mother to lead an aimless life in Vienna. He appeared to have been affected by her death, but only after he had remained away while she had sickened and died. Hitler ceded Poland's eastern areas to Soviet Russia, a reasonable price for Stalin's complicity, and the beginning on April 1, 1940, after using the lull of the "phony" war to prepare more surprises, attacked Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, and France.
