ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the relation between media and various audience segments. It examines the five focal points, such as—the art, the artist, the audience, America, and the medium—and the various relationships that obtain among them will provide those interested in the media with some useful and suggestive ideas. There are, in addition to the text and the medium, other matters or focal points to consider: the artist or creative personality behind a given text, the audience for whom the text was created, and the society in which the text is created. The chapter considers the text and the artists, the text and the audience, the text and society. It focuses on the artists and their relation to the intended audience, to society, and the limitations and empowerments generated by the medium they use. The chapter also focuses on the audience and its relation to society in general and the medium.
