ABSTRACT

The Terminator is a science fiction film made in 1984 starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as a malevolent cyborg sent from future times to present-day American society to kill a young woman, Sarah Connor. The Terminator is a time-travelling cyborg, a robot with a veneer of flesh, which seems human, that is programmed to accomplish its mission and use whatever means are necessary to do so. The Terminator violates one of Asimov's laws for robots, that they will not hurt human beings. It is a nightmare figure, half-machine, half-human (or seemingly human), that stalks Sarah Connor relentlessly and single-mindedly, destroying anyone or anything that interferes with its mission. In essence, the plot of The Terminator is a sustained chase story in which the Terminator, acted with a grim deadness by Schwarzenegger, searches for and attacks Sarah Connor. The Terminator is an alien, but not a bug-eyed monster which is easy to detect, even though it may be powerful and scary.
