ABSTRACT

The organizational acceleration of social movements can be conceptualized metaphorically in terms of temperature. Sociologist John Lofland has written of a movement's resource mobilization as a variable rather than a dichotomy, that is, with different levels of fervency or achievement. The most transparent example of this trend concerned original deprogrammer Ted Patrick's attempt to convince a LaGrange County, Indiana woman to rejoin her husband in the Old Order Amish Church. In 1990 a Mennonite couple, Bob and Sue Miller, put Patrick in contact with an Amish husband in rural LaGrange. Patrick made several mistakes. Annie was put screaming into the basement of a southern Illinois farmhouse, distracting Elma upstairs while Patrick tried to lecture her about her beliefs. Peering through the front door peephole she saw a person who appeared to be a pizza delivery man. Earlier that evening she had ordered a pizza for dinner, but now she assumed the store had made a mistake by delivering a duplicate.
