ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at how super longevity will literally redefine the very nature of what we mean by the term career. The Boomers are nearing retirement age just as the thriving United States economy creates a greater, not a lesser, need for the generation's bodies and minds. The United States economy is generating two million or more jobs each year, driving the United States unemployment rate to historic lows. Sabbaticals are a tradition in academia. A sabbatical possibly can be a very good antidote to burnout that occurs on jobs. The "virtual" online trend in education is already making lifetime learning a reality. According to the United States Department of Education online computer teaching is the fastest-growing segment of higher education. One of the more impressive and elaborate of these corporate programs is the Boston University Corporate Education Center. The center offers award-winning programs in business, project management, information technology training, and professional education.
