ABSTRACT

This chapter examines some of the general ideas necessary to advance the Afrocentric idea. Afrocentricity establishes itself as a vigorous intellectual idea in line with the best Africological thinking. The Afrocentrist is concerned with discovering in every place and in all circumstances the subject position of the African person. Ama Mazama has advanced the idea that Africology is a discipline devoted to the renaissance of the African world. The idea of conscientization is at the center of Afrocentricity because this is what makes it different from Africanity. The chapter argues that the minimum characteristics for an Afrocentric project should include: an interest in psychological location, a commitment to finding the African subject place, and the defense of African cultural elements. This includes a commitment to lexical refinement, and a commitment to correct the history of Africa. Thus, Africology, which Calls the Afrocentric study of African phenomena, is a discipline with several subject fields.
