ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the basic transformation the men of Redemption House undergo as they become disciples and begin to reorder their lives in line with the evangelical moral logic. It illustrates how the life stories (or accounts) the men relate to me are shaped by and reflective of the group ideology as well as their own "druggin' life" experiences. This experience of redefinition of self, of conversion from sinner-addict to redeemed disciple, constitutes a central process of discipleship training for participants at Redemption House. The chapter witnesses men using biographical reconstruction as a means of self-reformation in various stages of discipleship training at Redemption House; they learned a new way to conceive of their pasts in order to make new sense of their present selves and reconstruct possible futures. Although self reconstruction also occurs at Recovery House, the issue of recruitment is not a major element there, as it is at Redemption House.
