ABSTRACT

In this section, there are four addiction careers in administration and government service: Cees Goos, a good friend and colleague of mine, who was responsible for the programme on ‘substance abuse’ in the European office of the World Health Organization; Robert Du Pont, who, amongst many other positions in US government service, became the first Director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse; Leland Towle, who, amongst many other responsibilities, led international activities for the US National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA); and, Richard Fuller who directed NIAAA’s clinical and prevention research programme.
