ABSTRACT
Rome declined, and Western civilization all but disappeared. For many hundred years after the sacking of the city on the Tiber, the peoples of Europe lived a very barren life, for the cultural achievements of antiquity were lost, and no new ones were created. The economic wealth of Greece and Rome had likewise vanished.
