ABSTRACT

Fabians. The Fabian Society was one of the earliest socialist organizations in England and has been one of the longest lived in the world. Its history has been largely that of a small core of its membership, and indeed could largely be told through the biographies of Sidney Webb (Lord Passfield), Beatrice Potter (Mrs Webb), George Bernard Shaw, G. D. H. Cole and Margaret Postgate (Mrs Cole). The influence of the Fabians as individuals, and on the whole they sought influence, not power, has been very great, but the influence of the Society has often been over-estimated.
