ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the social injustices continuing to be experienced by social work students and academics on the basis of their religious beliefs which may be at variance with the preferences of selected faculty and administrators. The Council on Social Work Education commits itself to an affirmative action policy that permeates the entire organization and reflects the diversity of its membership. The Affirmative Action Policy shall apply to all areas and activities of the Council on Social Work Education as reflected in the composition of staff, elected and appointed voluntary positions and vendors. The existence of the entirely separate membership group called the National Association of Black Social Workers, with its own journal and conference, is further testament of the failure of NASW to advocate effectively on behalf of African American social workers. For many years NASW held an annual national conference, attended by thousands of members and non-members.
