ABSTRACT

This chapter proposes a way to spread the load of care and health promotion more broadly throughout society. It also proposes annual cycles of inter-organisational learning and change led by different groups and supported by primary care and public health. The chapter aims to nurture local communities for health. It explores a set of skills that help people to engage in the cycles in productive ways. A new baby is a wonderful experience for new parents that release strong emotions to care. Quickly parents discover unfamiliar tasks and experiences, like sleepless nights and different opinions about parenting. Recognising that school is a transformational moment for families helps parents and teachers as well as children to re-learn citizenship skills, for example being a team player. Schools can help children to learn the full range of skills to interact in the world in healthy ways. Different models of local health community naturally develop in ways that fit well with the local context.
