ABSTRACT

This chapter shows how live manuals help everyone to remember what they have to do in these cycles. At first sight a live manual looks like any other policy document – it describes leaders of work programmes, care pathways, protocols, audits and training. Live manuals also help everyone to value the contributions of the large number of people in different parts of the system. The main differences are that it is web-based, continually updated and, crucially, used every day as a live, useful resource. Different teams are responsible for updating different parts. Writing and updating a live manual helps practice leadership teams to develop their professional networks and their knowledge of the topic at the same time. System leadership teams can update the sections that describe whole systems of care and education, whereas sections that describe local initiatives are best updated by practice and locality leadership teams.
