ABSTRACT

Jan is forty-one. He is a high school science teacher. He was fixed up with June by his brother-in-law when he was thirty-five, about two years after he was divorced from his first wife, Sue Ann. He and June lived together three years with Jan's children by that first marriage— Paul, who is now eleven, and Lisbeth, who is eight—then decided to get married. "It seemed as though we were going to continue hanging around together, and we thought it would be nice to get old and creaky together—walk around holding hands like old folks—so we might as well get married." June had not been married before and was somewhat scared of having children, but she got along well with Lisbeth and Paul, found she could fill a mother's role, and was starting to consider having a child of her own with Jan. They never got that far.
