ABSTRACT
This chapter describes some of the background and careful preparation, what happened on the night, and some of the challenging consequences of Scrap Metal. The title of a published account of this work describes it succinctly: "From Therapy to Community: Making Music in Neurological Rehabilitation". The Scrap Metal concert was the logical and practical outcome of a broader Community Music Therapy project Stuart had been working on for the last few years. Stuart and the woman introduced the scrap metal idea to other people in the rehabilitation community. Stuart frames the evening with a short talk on the basic idea of Scrap Metal the fact that there are times we all feel we're on the scrap-heap. Stuart comments: "What seemed at first to be contradictions between 'therapy' and 'community' are in fact points of tension which are overcome by the continual commitment of participants to their changing musical work".
