ABSTRACT

Robert Alexander Stewart Macalister commenced his archaeological endeavours in the Levant as an assistant to Frederick Jones Bliss in the excavations of the Shephelah mounds, carried out in the years 1898–1900 (Bliss and Macalister 1902). He then went on to direct excavations in the region (at Tel Gezer and Jerusalem), excavations which are discussed in other papers in this volume.
