ABSTRACT

The term "operationalization" has to do with going from a concept to a measurement. The first stage in operationalizing a concept is to choose the variable that will constitute measure. The function of the recode command is to reclassify the values of a variable in order to reduce the number of categories or better approximate conceptualization. The recode command can be used to change the contents of any variable. The function of the generate command is to create a new variable from some combination of two or more other variables. The generate command can also be used to create a new variable based on some logical condition. The generate command allows us to create a new variable, whereas the replace command allows us to modify the coding of that variable. Variable label is often helpful to have variable descriptions attached to variable names to more thoroughly describe a variable.
