ABSTRACT

In order to work pro-socially workers we need to make every effort to understand and value other people’s perspectives and experiences and not to make assumptions about them. When trying to work pro-socially the challenge is, on the one hand, to balance the need to encourage people to choose to conform more closely to what is considered to be appropriate behaviour, while on the other hand taking account of the perspective and needs of the individual. Ethnicity is often used by people to identify those persons they feel they have most in common with due to a mixture of genetics, history and experience. The terms ‘ethnic minority’, ‘minority ethnic groups’ or ‘black and ethnic minority’ are all part of common usage. Auditory learners will be more satisfied with a verbal description. They are tuned into making sense of the world through what they hear.
